A Brief Into Humayun Tomb’s History

Built under the patronage of Empress Bega Begum (also known as Haji Begum), Humayun’s first wife and chief consort in the 1560s, Humayun Tomb is an architectural brilliance. The Empress was commissioned to build the tomb in 1558 as a memorial of Emperor Humayun. A homage to Mughal Emperor Humayun and houses the graves of other Begums and Rulers.

Architecture of Humayun’s Tomb

The Central Asian and Persian styles of Islamic architecture were introduced during the rule of the Turks and Mughals. Empress Haji Begum selected Persian architects, Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and his son, Sayyid Muhammad to design the tomb in Persian style. Humayun tomb was built with trabeate, beams, lintels, and employing pillars; corbel brackets, and balconies, which were the style of Indian architecture, particularly Rajasthani architecture. The Tomb is made of red sandstone and white marble decorated in the most distinct styles. It was made strong enough to last more than a century.

Sanduq is a boutique shop selling artifacts, handcrafts, heirlooms, and antiques inspired by Mughal influence. The shop is particularly famous for its Pashmina and cashmere shawls, carpets, and more near Humayun Tomb, near Nizamuddin East Market.

Arab ki Sarai Gateway was built in the 16th century within the Humayun Tomb complex for Persian craftsmen and their horses. It is believed to be built by Emperor Humayun’s widow Haji Begum.

Located on the Outer Ring Road near Humayun Tomb, Gurdwara Damdama Sahib is associated with the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. This sacred place commemorates meeting with Emperor Bahadur Shah.

Isa Khan’s Tomb is situated within the complex of Humayun Tomb. The tomb was made in honor of Isa Khan Niazia, a well-known Pashtun noble in the court of Sher Shah Suri. An octagonal structure is built mainly of red sandstone.
